Starting a Free Wordpress Blog

 You want to start a blog.  A place to share your thoughts, ideas and passions.  A place to start a community with your fellow bloggers and internet readers.  But how is a blog started?  Is it complicated? Do I need to know hard and/or funny computer languages? Will it take me hours to set up and run? The answers to all those questions is no.

Wordpress.com makes setting up a blog so easy! Let's get started!

When you visit http://wordpress.com/ and press the orange "sign-up" button it takes you to the 1st of 2 pages you will need to fill out to get your blog. On the first page:

• Fill out a user name, this will be the actual blog domain name. Think wisely!
• Your password 2x
• Your email (it must be valid)
• Check the box that refers to the "legal flotsam" aka terms of service. Be sure to scan or read them.
• And the click the circle that says "Gimme a Blog!"
• Hit the next button

Next Wordpress will let you know if you are a go with your blog user name or not. Sometimes someone else has already taken that name and you need to try again. If you are a go then you are ready for the second sign up page.

 On the 2nd page you will see:

• Your very own blog domain name. You are almost blogging!
• The title of the blog.  This does not need to be the same as the domain name so switch it up if you like but keep it close to the domain name.
• Language: click the one you want your blog published in.
• The privacy settings.  This is important.  Are you looking to make worldwide friends? Then click public.  Or is this blog for you and a select few? Click private. You can also block Google and other search engines from coming through and trying to rank you. This is another middle of the line privacy setting.  But this will also make it harder for readers to find you, especially if you get popular!

When you have thought carefully about all your options, go ahead, really, go ahead and click SIGN-UP!

Now you need to check the email address you entered while signing up. Wordpress will be sending you a link to activate your account. This is why you needed a valid email address.

Sign in to your email, find the message from Wordpress, it may be in your spam box. And click the link to activate. It will take you back to Wordpress and your account is now active!!

For now your blog has a very standard look. But it is easy to make it your own in now time.

• When loging in never check the "remember me" box at a puplic computer.
• Always log out at any session.
